An Overview of What is a VPN Concentrator

Many of you may already know what a VPN is or at least have a general idea of what it is and what it does. In fact, you or someone you know may already be using one right now.

Generally speaking, a VPN is a piece of software or application that enables secure browsing by giving you an IP address that makes it so appear to be in another region. Aside from security purposes, they are also used in order to gain access to content on the internet that is not available in one’s region.

VPN’s stand for ‘virtual private network’. Some commonly known examples are NordVPN and ExpressVPN if you’re thinking about getting one yourself.

The Working Role of a VPN Concentrator

VPN’s are commonly used by private individuals at home or that are using a foreign network outside. They aren’t the only by those at home, but by corporations as well – and this is important for a number of reasons.

The data transferred within corporations are all sensitive information and so VPNs are an obvious choice. What about those corporations that have a great number of employees transferring data left and right?

At a certain point, the VPN used won’t be able to handle everything that is happening simultaneously. This is where the concentrators come into play.

They essentially improve on the previously mentioned limitations by adding in more features that help. In this case, they allow for more trafficking so that businesses can operate smoothly.

Features & Uses VPN concentrators:

VPN concentrators are a piece of hardware, similar to a router, that is added on to regular VPN’s to improve its functionality mainly by creating and managing VPN infrastructures – an upgrade if you will.

Aside from the mentioned feature, Concentrators also serve several functions that are listed below:

And that is the general idea of what they are and what they do. They are, as previously mentioned, an upgrade that you can obtain through usually in the case of mass VPN usage.

Are VPN Concentrators Worth it?

For the function they serve, yes, they are. Keep in mind though that it is mostly used by corporations due to its size, and so for the everyday individual, a regular VPN will suffice for safe browsing.

I suggest you always use a VPN with a small business router to keep your company information safe from any mishap.

They are also quite pricey, so if you do need one, keep that in mind.

We hope this article was useful and that by now, you would have a clearer understanding of what a VPN concentrator is and what they do.

And if you don’t already use a VPN, you may want to consider getting one yourself. After all, there’s no such thing as being too secure.

If you aren’t quite sure what to get, we recommend using NordVPN or ExpressVPN, but there are free options as well such as Hotspot Shield – all of which you can easily find in the App Store or Google Play.
