If you live in a busy household where your other family members are busy streaming high definition videos of uploading their photo albums online etc.

The Netgear Nighthawk XR500 is that piece of equipment exclusively designed for the diehard online gaming fan, who aches over each millisecond they lose from a high ‘ping’- the time delay you suffer between hitting the button on your controller and that signal reaching the host server.

What is important for online seamless gaming experience is the faster internet. For this every gamer should know the best router settings for faster internet.

The router is specifically designed to reduce this latency, and supercharge your gaming experience. With our experience we can definitely say that the XR500 is sure to leave the other gaming routers in digital dust.

Design: Hardware

One look at the device hardware tells you it’s not meant to be an ordinary router. The very large, black, aggressive sculpt of the router looks rather like a hostile, alien spaceship, frowning down at Earth. Which I believe is an amazing marketing and placement strategy by the manufacturers in order to attract the gaming geeks. It comes with four (quite fierce) amplified antennae screw onto the router’s back and sides, helping with its look.

The router isn’t easy to mount onto a wall, so it does take up quite a lot of space on the desk; it’s 45 percent larger than the Linksys WRT 32X gaming router. It flaunts one WAN and four LAN ports, a 1.7GHZ dual-core processor, five Gigabit Ethernet ports, a 2.6Gbps Wi-Fi speed rating, and supports dual-band operation, from where it can be switched between 2.4GHz mode to 5 GHz mode.

The Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) feature allows you to tinker with the 5GHz channel if there is interference. It automatically selects and uses the clearest data channel available.  The router also has a generous amount of RAM, almost 512MB, and 256MB of flash-storage space.

There’s also a lot of lights on the device- however, don’t worry, as you can switch off all but the power lights for your dark theatre experience. LEDs signal power on, internet access, and there are individual lights for all four Ethernet ports, the two USB ports, and the guest network. Two separate LEDs which double as ON/OFF buttons for Wi-Fi transmissions and for the WPS connection sequence.

Design: Software

The Nighthawk comes with a software package called DumaOS, developed by the company, NetDuma from Bedfordshire, UK. The router owes many of its unique features to this magic software, including: a user-friendly interface, the ability to connect to its nearest geographical server, and to restrict broadband access for other/non-gamer devices.

The Quality-of-Service feature on the Nighthawk is its ability to prioritize bandwidth. During an intense gaming session, you can open up the one-click box system window, and give your gaming device top dog status. If you don’t want other devices to receive even a small portion of the bandwidth, you could go ahead and apportion it all to your own device.

In its Hyper-traffic mode, the router will give data packets preference over one another. Gaming packets would be considered more urgent than, for example, emails, or social media notifications. Geo-filtering- another astounding feature of the XR500- enables it to force connection with the nearest host server. This reduced geographical distance greatly reduces the time delay that threatens your gaming reputation.

The makers of this router work with popular games, like Fortnight, Call of Duty, and Smash Bros; while playing, you can limit the maximum distance between you and your server in kilometers. Simply set your home location on the map, and you can custom-create Geo-Filters with different ranges for each of the online games you play.

WPA-2 encryption is used on data packets to keep them safe and private. If the router signal exceeds the geographical boundary of your residence, you can use a threshold to limit transmission level- and prevent signal thieves from ruining your internet speed. There’s also a firewall to keep safe from hackers. If you choose to stay private, you can set up a VPN- or Virtual Private Network- using the one-click option available on the device software.

Set-up your Netgear Nighthawk XR500 Pro Gaming Router using a web page, simply type “” in the browser search, after you’ve connected the router to your modem. You will be prompted to agree to the company’s license, give your router a unique name and password, and make initial configurations.

Afterwards, you can monitor the router’s performance – speed, number of users etc. – using a phone or tablet. You’ll have to install the Netgear’s Genie app for Android or iOS. Mostly, the setup process is rather simple and self-evident, and should take no more than ten minutes approx.

On the DumaOS dashboard, the screen is blood red with white font. But once you’re over that first impression, the myriad of features and settings can help you configure your device to best suit your gaming style.

A clean summary of the status and speed of your network is on the dashboard, but you can see the System Info page for a lot more information. It’s a multi-panel screen displaying memory usage for the processor and system, LAN status, connectivity status, and history of use, as well as Installed apps and their resource utilization.

However if you’re still struggling with set-up, the company offers you personal support for 90 days. There’s also a ton of information, troubleshooting and optimization resource available at the Netgear’s support site.

Final Verdict

Netgear’s Nighthawk Pro-Gaming XR500 is an ultra-performance router, with good close-range throughput, a low-latency design, and the latest Wi-Fi technology. The DumaOS operating system is easy to setup, user-friendly and gives you an unparalleled level of control over network traffic, network resource distribution, and plenty of system settings. But its long-range throughput is less than perfect, and the hefty price tag will have you pause and reconsider.

There may be other options that could give you your money’s worth, but the XR500 is, by far, the best router currently in the market.
